OBITUARY

S.M. (Shah Mohammad) Sayem Mahmud, (‘Fiha’ to his relatives), passed away peacefully on 8 April, 2009 at 1.40 p.m (Inna Lillahe . . . . Rajeun). He was 24 and was suffering from Fibro sarcoma. Sayem fought bravely with his disease for long eleven months (May 2008-March 2009) with smiling face, never whimpered loudly all through his arduous struggle.

Kazi Nazrul Islam, the ‘Rebel’ poet - National Poet of Bangladesh

Kazi Nazrul Islam, known as the ‘Rebel’ poet in Bengali literature and the ‘Bulbul’ (Nightingale) of Bengali music, was one of the most colourful personalities of undivided Bengal between 1920 and 1940. His role in freeing modern Bengali poetry from poor and unsuccessful imitations of Rabindranath Tagore was significant. He may be considered a pioneer of post-Tagore modernity in Bengali poetry.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)

He was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, which was a new religious sect in nineteenth-century Bengal and which attempted a revival of the ultimate monistic basis of Hinduism as laid down in the Upanishads . He was educated at home; and although at seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, he did not finish his studies there. In his mature years, in addition to his many-sided literary activities, he managed the family estates, a project which brought him into close touch with common humanity and increased his interest in social reforms.

Siddique Mahmudur Rahman was awarded Silver-Bronze Medal from 22nd Asian International Stamp Exhibition, ‘Jakarta 2008’, under the patronage of Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP), held during 23-28 October 2008 for his outstanding research publication ‘Artist K G Mustafa and his Outstanding Designs." ', 'This research compendium on postal history and postage stamps of Bangladesh created great enthusiasm among the researchers and general readers.

Siddique Mahmudur Rahman earlier was awarded Silver-Bronze Medal from Cardinal Spellman Philatelic Museum Inc., USA, Bronze Medal from American Philatelic Society, USA both in 1990 and Silver Bronze Medal by Australian Philatelic Federation in 1993 for his pioneering publication ‘Bangladesh Stamps and Postal History’.
